چکیده

The exact time of functional closure of the ductus arteriosus in the newborn human infant has remained a matter of speculation for many years. Studies of human anatomical specimens have shown that complete morphologic closure requires from four to eight weeks (1-5). Animal experiments have been the main approach to the study of functional closure. All workers agree that at the time of birth, but before the onset of respiration and inflation of the lungs, the pressure in the pulmonary artery is equal to or greater than the pressure in the aorta and that a considerable portion of the output of the right ventricle passes through the ductus into the descending aorta. Most workers agree that in animals, with the onset of respiration, there occurs, within a few minutes, a rapid fall in pulmonary artery pressure so that blood no longer flows through the ductus into the aorta. However, Everett and Johnson (6) by injecting radioactive material into the right ventricle and studying the amount appearing in the dorsal aorta distal to the ductus in newborn puppies felt that the flow through the ductus into the aorta may persist for as long as nine hours after birth. There is less agreement about the mechanism of this early functional closure of the ductus. Kennedy and Clark (7-9) observed prompt closure of the guinea pig ductus by muscular contraction during oxygen breathing, but Barron (10) could not corroborate this effect of oxygen in the lamb fetus. Other workers who have studied the closure of the ductus in the newborn lamb by

Intravenous Paracetamol and Patent Ductus Arteriosus Closure

Background: Standard medical treatments for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure are, including indomethacin/ibuprofen and surgical ligation. Nowadays, a new strategy to close PDA is the use of paracetamol. The present study aimed to describe the use of intravenous (IV) paracetamol for PDA closure in neonates who present a contraindication to ibuprofen or ibuprofen failure with no possibility...

Patent ductus arteriosus in a lamb: A case report

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a persistent patency of a vessel normally present in the fetus that connects the pulmonary arterial system to the aorta. The ductus arteriosus fails to close at birth when breathing commences and placental blood circulation is removed. Closure of the ductus arteriosus arises in response to decline pulmonary vascular resistance and increased systemic vascular re...

The Effect of Oral Ibuprofen on Closure of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Term Neonates: A Clinical Trial Study

Background The function of ductus arteriosus closes within a few minutes to a few days after birth in term neonates. In some cases, the duct remains open after birth, a condition which is called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). PDA is associated with high rates of neonatal mortality and morbidity. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of...

Early and late outcome of treatment with oral ibuprofen in preterm infants suffering from patent ductus arteriosus: A randomized clinical trial

Background and Objective: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents are the treatment of choice for ductal closure in premature newborn. This study evaluates early and late outcome, as well as the effectiveness of oral ibuprofen in the treatment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in premature infants. Methods: In this clinical trial, all preterm infants below 37 weeks, with documentation of PDA w...

Efficacy and complications of oral ibuprofen and intravenous acetaminophen in closure of patent ductus arteriosus of preterm neonates

Background: Previous studies have considered patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) a common finding in premature infants, leading to complications such as intracranial hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis and pulmonary dysplasia. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the efficacy of oral ibuprofen and intravenous acetaminophen in the closure of arterial duct in premature newborns. We also e...
